Abrasive spindle mounted flap wheels with a 3mm or 6mm spindle designed for use on drills or air grinders.  Abrasive spindle mounted flap wheels are often a poorly considered range of products but there are a wide range of flap wheels designed for every application:  from heavy metal removal to finishing and polishing.

Ceramic Abrasive Spindle Flap Wheels

One of the most recent developments by Cibo  the new ceramic abrasive spindle mounted wheels can remove metal in a way that traditional abrasive flap wheels have always failed to do.  The Cibo Ceramic abrasive grain is held in a strong resin matrix on a tough poly cotton backing, giving the flap wheels the capacity to cut quickly and last much longer than traditional wheels.

    • Because the Cibo Ceramics cut so quickly we often recommend going one grade finer then wheel using an aluminium oxide abrasive flap wheel.  You will achieve a finer finish, faster and with a wheel that still lasts much longer.
    • Cibo Ceramics spindle mounted flap wheels are available in 40, 60, 80 and 120 grit and in sizes 30 x 20mm, 40 x 20mm, 50 x 30mm, 60 x 30mm and 80 x 50mm.

Aluminium Oxide Abrasive Spindle Flap Wheels

Traditional aluminium oxide abrasive flap wheels mounted on a spindle have been available for many years.  They are manufactured using a durable semi-flexible cotton cloth backing and a premium aluminium oxide abrasive.

The aluminium abrasive flap wheels are ideal for general purpose shaping and finishing on steel and non-ferrous metals.  Traditional die and mould makers have always used them for shaping and polishing due to their particular wear characteristics.   The abrasive great will become smoother quite quickly which allows for a surface finish to be blended over time.

  • Aluminium oxide abrasive flap wheels on a spindle are available from 10mm to 80mm in diameter and from 40 grit to 320 grit.

n.b.  Be aware of iron (Fe) contamination when working on stainless steel.  All our Cibo aluminium oxide abrasive flap wheels use an iron free abrasive cloth.  That is not true for all aluminium oxide abrasive flap wheels available today.

Combination / Combi Spindle Mounted Abrasive Flap Wheels

A combination of abrasive cloth and Tex / Scotchbrite abrasive interleaved between the abrasive flaps creates an ideal finishing and deburring wheel.  The abrasive cloth gives the wheel strength whilst the tex / scotch-brite material provides a clean, burr free finish.

  • Combi abrasive flap wheels are available from 30mm to 100mm in diameter, from 60 grit to 240 grit abrasive cloth and with both aluminium oxide and ceramic abrasive cloth options.
  • Have you tried the Cibo Ceramics ‘Ginger Ninja’ combi flap wheel?  A 60 grit ceramic abrasive cloth action combined with a super-strong non-woven fleece has resulted in one of our most popular products for stainless steel fabrication work.  The Ginger Ninja wheels have the capacity to remove even deep scratches whilst leaving a satin polished finish.

Tex / ‘Scotchbrite’ Spindle Mounted Abrasive Flap Wheels

A genuine finishing wheel, the Tex / Scotchbrite abrasive flap wheels are designed for blending and finishing applications.  The medium A spindle flap wheel will do a great job of removing unwanted scratches and leaving a consistent satin finish on brushed aluminium.  The Med A and Fine A flap wheels are commonly used for removing weld discolouration and blueing on stainless steel.

  • Tex / scotchbrite type abrasive flap wheels are available from 30mm to 100mm in diameter.  Grades include Coarse, Medium Fine and Very Fine A flap wheels.

Unitised Spindle Mounted Abrasive wheels

Whilst technically not being a ‘flap wheel’ unitised abrasive wheels are another Cibo innovation.  Unitised abrasive wheels on a spindle are available in 3 different unitised product families.  MA being the most aggressive, SA being the finest finishing and the FA unitised being ideal for weld colour removal and satin finishing.

Felt Polishing Wheels & Points

The felt points and wheels work with the polishing compounds to achieve a bright polished finish.  They are found in the polishing section of our website.

Abrasive Spindle Mounted Flap Wheel Applications:

The Cibo Ceramic spindle mounted flap wheels have radically changed what a flap wheel can do.  Customers who previously used a 40 grit wheel to remove a weld, and used lots of wheels in the process, now use the Cibo Ceramics in a P80 grit, and the wheels last longer and they get a better finish.

Need we say more?

Assuming you mainly need to finish the flat or curved surfaces then we would recommed our Med Tex spindle mounted wheel which will remove most scratches to leave a lovely satin finish.  we normally recommend an 80mm diameter wheel for this application.

We will recommend 2 different flap wheels, dependent on the finish you would like on the metal after using the spindle mounted wheel:

For a bright (not full mirror) polished finish we would recommend the SA grade 5 unitised wheels which will remove all the discolouration and also any light scratches in the surface of the metal to leave a bright high reflective finish.

For a fine satin finish to blend the metal then our new FA grade 3 or 4 wheels will all leave a lovely soft satin finish.

Many of our products will remove rust but if you need to remove rust without the risk of damaging the parent metal further then the CSA black stripping wheels are a great option.  They won’t clog up and neither will they eat into the parent metal.

The open web structure allows for the rust to be removed whilst the soft action prevents the wheel from dig into the clean parent metal.

If you need to remove paint or rust off aluminium then you need to proceed with more caution as the CSA wheels can damage the metal surface.  In this situation we would recommend an FAUS unitised wheel such as:  FAUS/4/80256

Aluminium is quite a soft metal and it would therefore be easy to be too aggressive and put deep score marks into the metal.  To prevent this and to ensure you have a smooth consistent soft satin finish here are some product recommendations varying by the diameter of the abrasive flap wheel you want to use:

If you have satin / brushed finish stainless steel but you have heat discolouration then we have a number of products which you can fit onto a die grinder or drill which will do the job well.
