Are 1mm cutting discs safe?

To ensure cutting discs are safe for use on an angle grinder all our cutting discs use a re-enforcing scrim in the centre of the cutting disc to bind the abrasive together.  Thicker cutting discs will have more scrim layers.

1mm wide cutting discs which are commonly available to fit on 4 1/2″ / 115mm and 5″ / 125mm angle grinders have a single scrim layer.  This single scrim layer means they have a very narrow cutting face.  This narrow cutting profile means that the Cibo 1mm cutting discs will slice through thin stainless steel and sheet metal very quickly.

When used correctly thin cutting discs are a great product for cutting thin wall metals. We recommend them for metal less than 2mm in thickness.

Can I use a Cutting Disc for Deburring Metal Edges?

It is very tempting to use the side of a cutting disc for removing burrs and rags after cutting but we do not recommend this.  It is dangerous and a bad practice.

The scrim structure inside a cutting disc is designed to ensure strength along the cutting plain, Cutting discs are not strong enough to safely apply a sidewards pressure to the disc, using the side of a cutting disc can cause the disc to shatter.  A shattered cutting disc rotating at 11,000rpm is likely to cause serious injury.

We recommend using a flap disc or sanding disc for deburring

With the Multi Slysa Diamond Blade Cutting Discs, yes you can.  The design of these blades allows for them to be used on granite, stone, brick and a range of other construction materials.

 

Their durability means they are a main stay on work sites, as one disc is used on various materials.  That durability is in part thanks to the laser welded diamond segments that run around the circumference of the disc.  The segments are 10mm deep, giving them long life.

 

Their life time is further extended by the “turbo” pattern on the segments that aid in cooling as the discs cut, reducing wear.

 

AFS carry a range of these versatile discs in differing sizes (125mm, 230mm & 300mm), allowing them to be mounted on either an angle grinder, a chop saw or a Stihl saw.

No. Using a cutting disc for deburring is dangerous and can result in a serious injury if the disc shatters when subject to lateral forces.

Cutting discs are designed with a reinforcing web layer in the centre of the cutting disc so they are safe to work on the end of the disc but this is not designed for pressure from the side.

Unless you buy a cutting disc which is specifically recommended for deburring then they will not have enough reinforcing layers to ensure operator safety.

This is a historical thing. Traditional resins used in cutting discs had a relatively short shelf life and therefore they had to be given an expiry date. The law has however not kept up with changing technology and modern resins last much longer.

Note:  AFS cannot and will not recommend that discs are used beyond their expiry date.

Traditionally yes. But as a premium supplier we now only supply discs which are suitable for use on both stainless steel and mild steel.
