Should I use Zirconium Oxide or a Ceramic Abrasive belt?

Traditionally heavy stock removal was done with coarse grit zirconia belts.  The introduction of the new Cibo Ceramics has radically changed that.  Ceramic abrasive belts for powerfile machines are almost the same price as zirconia belts so it is a simple question of performance.  Cibo Ceramic belts will outlast zirconia belts by as much as 3 or 4x, making ceramic belts much more cost effective.  And given that the ceramic belts will also cut quicker and cooler than zirconium oxide then the decision is an easy one.

Is Zirconia the Belts Abrasive for Grinding Fillet Welds?

Power Files are great general workhorse tools for metal fabrication but offer limitations when working on stainless steel fabrication, particularly when dressing fillet welds. 20 years ago everybody used the blue zirconia belts. Today our FX87 Cibo Ceramic abrasive belts in 60 and 80 grit are the best and most popular abrasive option. They have the ability to remove welds in a controlled fashion and prepare the surface for satin finishing. The ceramics will outlast a zirconia belt 3 or even 4 times the belt life.

From an 80 grit belt it is very easy to use the powerfile to put on a satin finish with the coarse or medium ‘scotchbrite’ type conditioning belts.  If you need to blend to a Q-rail type finish then we recommend the very fine conditioning belt.

Cibo Abrasives have spent many years perfecting the art of power file belt manufacture.

Cibo have invested in the latest joint testing equipment so they know the belt joints will last time and time again.  Every batch is tested to ensure it meets the minimum strength characteristics demanded by Cibo.
